Compresses

Compress are a very basic form of treatment. Basically you will fold a cloth or small towel, into a pad.  You wet it using hot or cold water mixed with essential oils, and apply it to the areas of concern.

Depending on the use a hot or cold compress and specific placement, compresses can aid in treatment of muscular pain, sprains, circulation, lymphatic relief (release) spasms, cramps, pain reduction, internal organ issues and congestion.

Hot compresses are used to treat old injuries, spasms, muscle aches, rheumatic pain, cramps, boils, toothaches and to increase circulation.

Making a hot compress

To make a hot compress, take about a 2 cups of hot water, add  4 - 6 drops of your selected essential oil to it. Then place your folded cloth or small towel, on top of the water and let it soak it up. Lightly wring out the excess water and place it over the area to be treated.

Cover the warm compress with a wrap to hold it in place or a plastic bag, and place a towel on top to absorb any excess moisture.

If needed, you can replace with a new compress after it has cooled to body temperature.  Hot compresses, drive the essential oils deep into the bodies tissue.

Cold Compresses are also used for muscular pain and  lymphatic relief, swollen joints, inflammation, sprains, fevers, bruises, and headaches.

Making a cold compress

To make a cold compress take about a 2 cups of cool water, add  10-20 ice cubes and let sit for 5 minutes.  Then add 4 - 6 drops of your selected essential oil to it. Place your folded cloth or small towel, on top of the water and let it soak it up. Lightly wring out the excess water and place it over the area to be treated.  When the compress is heated up to body temperature, you can replace it if necessary.

Select your essential oil for use with the compresses based on the essential oils properties and common therapeutic uses..
